Nodes

Last updated 8 days ago

The Nodes Type uses geometry nodes to create the panel cut effect based on any marked sharp edges in the mesh.

This is pretty experimental for now and uses the boolean functionality in geometry nodes to generate the effect so it can be slow in high resolution meshes. It might change in the future if more features open up in geometry nodes.

The panel cut effect is visible in edit mode but if it becomes slow you can turn it off in the modifier tab as shown in the image above.

You need to mark sharp the edges you want as panel cut for the geometry nodes to work.

Listed below are the properties under bevel type and what they do.

Width

This used to increase the size of the panel cut.

Tilt

This is used to tilt or rotate the boolean object used for the panel cut. Stay within 45° intervals for optimal results e.g. 45, 90.

Remove Center Faces

Removes abberant faces in the symmetry line when using a mirror modifier. Turn this off if it affects the panel cuts negatively.

The Nodes Type typically works without any problem on simple angular meshes but some angled surfaces can introduce a different tilt to some panel cuts resulting in a different orientation than the rest.

Notice that if Figure 4, the horizontal line is tilted 90° compared to the other line which is in a 45° angle.

It certainly has some limitations for now but I will be constanly looking for other methods in geometry nodes that will be a better version than this. For now, work with its strenghts and you will be rewarded with a modular and nondestructive workflow.
